Multiple Network Interface Configuration for the Gateway Appliance
Multiple Network Interface Configuration for the Gateway Appliance

This guide walks you through the process of configuring multiple Network Interface Cards (NICs) on your Gateway appliance.

Updated today

Overview

The Gateway appliance allows you to configure one or more NICs to meet your networking requirements. You can perform this setup:

  • On-site using the terminal interface.

  • Remotely via the Web Portal.

Getting Started

Prerequisites

  • For Terminal setup: Physical access to the Gateway appliance.

  • For Web Portal setup: The Gateway appliance must already be activated and have at least one NIC with internet connectivity.

Configuration Methods

Terminal-Based Configuration

Ideal for on-site technicians or scenarios without internet access.

  1. Access the Terminal UI:

    1. Connect a monitor and keyboard to the Gateway appliance.

    2. Navigate to IP Configuration menu by pressing the F2 key.

  2. Configure the Network Interface Card (NIC):

    1. Automatic (DHCP):

      1. Select the NIC you want to configure from the dropdown list (e.g. enp6s18).

      2. For the Configure IPv4 option, select Automatic (DHCP).

      3. Save your changes.

        Automatic (DHCP)

    2. Manual (Static):

      1. Select the NIC you want to configure from the dropdown list (e.g. enp6s19).

      2. For the Configure IPv4 option, select Manual (Static).

      3. Specify network details for the following option:

        1. IP address (Required).

        2. Network CIDR (Required).

        3. Default Gateway (Optional).

        4. DNS Server(s) (Optional).

          Manual (Static) - With WAN

          Manual (Static) - Without WAN

      4. Save and apply the configuration.

  3. Validation:

    1. Navigate to Status menu by pressing the F1 key.

    2. Verify that the configuration is persistent across reboots.

Web Portal Configuration

Best for remote setups where on-site access is unavailable.

  1. Log in to the Web Portal:

    1. Navigate to the Devices section.

    2. Inside the Devices section, select the Gateway option.

    3. Select the Gateway appliance you want to configure.

  2. Configure the Network Interface Card (NIC):

    1. Automatic (DHCP):

      1. Open the Overview tab.

      2. Select the NIC to configure (e.g., enp6s18).

      3. Select Automatic (DHCP).

      4. Save your changes.

    2. Manual (Static):

      1. Open the Overview tab.

      2. Select the NIC to configure (e.g., en6s19).

      3. Select Manual (Static).

      4. Specify network details for the following:

        1. IP Address (required).

        2. Network CIDR (required).

        3. Default Gateway (Optional).

        4. DNS Server(s) (Optional).

      5. Save your changes.

        Without WAN Access

        With WAN Access

  3. Apply Configuration:

    1. The Gateway appliance will poll the server and apply the new settings.

    2. Ensure at least one NIC maintains WAN access for connectivity.

  4. Validation:

    1. Verify the new configuration through the portal's status page.

Best Practices

  • Backup Your Configuration: Before making changes, save a backup of the current network settings. This ensures you can roll back if needed.

  • Verify Connectivity: Always test the applied configuration for connectivity to avoid losing remote access.

  • Rollback Mechanism: Use the built-in rollback feature to revert changes if the configuration results in a loss of connectivity.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Network Connectivity Fails After Configuration

  • Check if the network details (IP address, gateway, subnet mask) are correct.

  • Use ping or Web Portal diagnostics to test connectivity.

Network Interface Card (NIC) Not Detected

  • Ensure the NIC is physically connected and powered.

  • Restart the Gateway appliance and check again.

Changes Not Applied

  • Verify the Web Portal status for any pending configurations.

Additional Considerations

  • Offline Scenarios: If the Gateway is offline, configurations will not persist until connectivity is restored.

  • Multi-NIC Setups: If using multiple NICs, ensure the Web Portal or terminal interface displays the correct IP addresses for each.
