Line Crossing Detection

Create alerts when an object moving in a specific direction crosses a virtual line in the camera video

Updated over a week ago

Overview

The Line Crossing analytics works with any camera that's connected to a Pure Cloud Storage gateway appliance in the Arcules platform. This tool allows you to draw a virtual line on the camera feed and detect when a person or vehicle crosses it in a specified direction. When a person or vehicle crosses the line, the system can trigger various automated responses through the Arcules Rules engine, including:

  • Recording video footage.

  • Generating alarm alerts.

  • Sending notifications to specified users.

Note 1: Cloud-based video analytics are currently not available for cameras connected to an Edge Storage gateway.

Note 2: Currently, the Line Crossing analytic detects only people or vehicles (bicycle, car, motorcycle, bus, truck).

Configuration

1. Access the Arcules Web Portal.

2. Select the Devices menu on the left panel. Then select the Video section:

3. Select the corresponding Camera:

4. A menu will appear on the right section.

5. Then, select the Analytics tab.

6. In the bottom part of this tab, you will see the Line Crossing option. A button on the right will allow you to enable it.

7. In this section, there is the option to configure the Line Crossing rules:

Rule Triggers

In this setting, you can add multiple virtual lines for the camera view and subsequently build a Rule for each one of them.

Add a Line

Select the Add button on the right side:

to open the new line configuration menu:

Title

Define the name of the line. This is used to easily identify the line when creating a rule.

Change Crossing Direction

Specify which direction objects must cross the line to trigger detection.

Regarding the direction, there are three options:

Reset Line

Returns the line to its last saved position in the camera view.

Crossing Detection

Note: The Crossing Detection feature is currently in early access. If you'd like to enable it for your organization, please reach out to our support team.

The Cross Detection section features two sliders that allow for more precise adjustment of object detection when crossing the line.

  • Traffic: Increases group size needed to trigger a crossing (the range allows you to set a minimum of 1 person/vehicle and a maximum of 10 people/vehicle). This option allows you to set a specific number of people/vehicle required to trigger detection. For example, if you set the Traffic slider to 4, the line-crossing rule will activate when four people/vehicles cross the line.

  • Time: Increases time window for a group to trigger a crossing (the range allows you to set a minimum of 1 minutes and a maximum of 10 minutes). This option lets you define the number of minutes needed to trigger detection. For example, if you set the Time slider to 6 minutes, the line-crossing rule will activate once 6 minutes have passed and the specified number of people/vehicles in the Traffic slider have crossed the line.

Example:

  • Traffic slider set to 3 people/vehicles.

  • Time slider set to 5 minutes.

This means that within a 5-minute interval, the rule will only be triggered after 3 people/vehicles have crossed the line.

After adjusting any of the sliders, click the Save button located on the right side to confirm your choice.

Edit a Line

To edit a line's properties, click on the pencil-type icon.

This will open the menu to change the line's properties:

Create a Rule

To set up an automated response when a line crossing event is detected, click the Rules icon.

This will take you to the Rules section of the Arcules portal:

Note: When creating a rule through the Line Crossing's rule icon, the rule will have the Line's Title as part of the Rule Name.

In this section you can configure all the options for the rule, especially what type of Action you want to use when an event is detected. For more information, please visit the Rules article.
