Adding a camera using the hostname instead of the IP address

Updated over 2 years ago

When adding new cameras to the gateway, the user has the option to either use auto discovery to discover the camera or enter the camera IP address manually. The Arcules web application now offers the option to add cameras via their hostname to the gateway unit.

The process of adding cameras via hostname is similar to manually adding cameras using their IP address.

  1. Login to the Arcules portal

  2. Hover over to the left navigation menu bar and and click on the 'Devices' icon to go to the Devices page

  3. Click on the “+” icon in top right corner of the page to the add a new camera

  4. In the add camera wizard page, click on the “+” icon to show the add camera dialog and enter the camera hostname in place of its IP address

  5. Upon clicking the “Connect” button, the gateway should recognize the camera and proceed with the add camera flow

  6. The gateway will from now on reference this camera using its hostname instead of its IP address

Users can also use hostname in lieu of IP address if adding cameras via the CSV bulk uploader.

Adding devices via hostname is convenient for organizations that shuffle IP addresses for cameras that have already been added to the gateway unit. Those cameras would still be connected to the gateway without additional user re-configuration post IP address change.

Note: In order for the gateway to recognize cameras using their hostname, the router which the gateway is connected to must have its DHCP setup to advertise DNS information. Please check with your network administrator to confirm this.
