Overview

For gateway-connected devices, Arcules provides two video storage options: Cloud Storage (also known as Pure Cloud) and Local gateway storage (also known as Edge Cloud). Customer must subscribe to either Edge or Pure cloud storage for their channels, on a per gateway basis.

Pure Cloud

For Pure Cloud, raw video data is buffered on the gateway and continuously uploaded to the cloud according to your recording schedule, with a retention time set per channel based on your subscription. Metadata is always buffered and uploaded continuously to the cloud, independent of any upload schedules.

Note: Cloud analytics requires the video to be in the cloud, so for a Pure Cloud channel that has an upload schedule configured, it will not have cloud analytics available until the video has been uploaded to the cloud.

Edge Cloud

For Edge Cloud, raw video data is stored on the gateway and not uploaded to the cloud (except when creating a case), while Metadata is buffered and uploaded to the cloud instantly for video playback from the cloud. Recorded video is stored based on the number of days of storage retention in your subscription.

For local storage, the Arcules Edge Cloud solution provides IT Managers or Installers the option to enable local gateway storage to reduce outbound bandwidth from video uploads to the cloud while benefiting from cloud managed video management.

How Edge Cloud local storage works:

IT Managers and Installers will have the ability to turn on local storage for each gateway they connect to the Cloud. This gives the flexibility based on the location to enable Cloud or Local Storage. Since video is stored on the gateway, a local retention time will need to be set for each gateway to age out video.

When a gateway is enabled for local storage mode, recorded video is stored on the gateway with metadata uploaded to the cloud. Video evidence for Cases will be archived in the cloud on demand. The video player will provide sequence data (recording/motion) for each channel and stream video from the gateway through the cloud when requested.

How much bandwidth does Edge Cloud use?

For continuous or motion-based recording stored locally, 10-50 Kbps of bandwidth is needed for each camera channel to send video and motion metadata to the Arcules cloud.

For live or recorded video playback on demand, the bandwidth needed depends on the bitrate for streaming video. With Edge Cloud, video will stream from the edge, to the cloud, to you.

For example, if you are viewing 1080p/12 FPS/H.264 you can expect to need approximately 2.5 Mbps per channel for both live and recorded video streaming.

Uploading evidence and uploading video to the cloud for Case Management retention will require bandwidth consistent with camera resolution and FPS settings.

Enable Local Storage

Important: You can only enable local storage if you subscribe to local storage.

To enable local storage, navigate to the Devices list and select the gateway you want to enable local storage for. Once you are in the gateway device details, select the “Storage” tab.

Click “Change Storage” and enter the retention time. Video is stored on the Gateway with an estimated maximum retention time or until the disk is full. The retention time set will be inherited by each camera connected to the gateway and can be overridden for each camera.

Select “Apply Changes” to continue.

Once you have verified you want to continue, click “Convert”. Note: This setting cannot be reverted.

The content primarily focuses on cameras and video functionalities; however, it's important to note that the same principles also apply to audio devices and audio recorded functionalities.
